Revision Rhinoplasty Options

Revision rhinoplasty sometimes referred to as secondary rhinoplasty is when a second surgery is performed on the nose to correct any complications from the first surgery or to enhance the appearance of the nose further. Most surgeons consider this a completely different procedure than the primary rhinoplasty surgery.

When considering a revision rhinoplasty it’s important to understand the procedure, the associated risks, different techniques available (depending on the surgeon you select) and most importantly what you can expect for your post operative outcome.

Why Consider Revision Rhinoplasty?

You may consider undergoing the procedure for many reasons, most likely due to the appearance of your nose. But a secondary surgery can also correct physical problems such as difficulty breathing, or even injuries or trauma that may have occurred since the first surgery.

Whatever your reason for considering the procedure it’s important that you set realistic expectations and communicate with your surgeon as much as possible.

Why is Revision Rhinoplasty Different From the Primary Surgery?

It is quite a different procedure due to the fact that a nose that has already undergone a rhinoplasty most likely has much less of its normal anatomy still in place. In other words there is less cartilage to work with which may make it necessary to do a tissue graft from elsewhere on the patient in order to provide the necessary cartilage to shape the nose. In addition to that there will be tough scar tissue that the surgeon will have to work with that further complicates the procedure.

Some surgeons will not perform the operation due to the stark difference in performing the procedure. So it’s important that you ensure the rhinoplasty surgeon you select is skilled in secondary nasal surgery and has plenty of experience successfully performing the procedure.

Revision Rhinoplasty Alternatives

Some patients elect to go with less invasive procedures rather than undergoing a serious procedure with the potential for numerous complications. Today, there are some less invasive alternatives to revision rhinoplasty that involve the use of dermal fillers.

It’s possible to correct minor problems in the appearance of the nose by having whats known as non-surgical rhinoplasty which involves a surgeon skillfully correcting bumps or reshaping the appearance of the nose by injecting fillers directly into the problem area. This is performed under local anesthesia without the need for hospitalization and all of the risks that go with using general anesthesia.
